마하트마 간디(Mahatma Gandhi, 1869.10.2 ~ 1948.1.30.)
인도의 민족 운동가이며, 남아프리카에서의 인종차별에 대한 투쟁과 영국에 대한 비폭력 저항운동으로 유명하다.
1. 권리의 진정한 근원은 의무이다.
The real root of rights is duty.
2. 기도하는 것은, 늙은 여인의 게으른 넋두리가 아니다. 적당히 이해되고 활용된다면 가장 유력한 도구이다.
Praying is not the lazy whine of an old woman. If properly understood and utilized, it is the most likely tool.
3. 나는 살기 위해, 봉사하기 위해, 또 가끔 즐기기 위해 먹은 적은 있어도 향락을 위해서는 먹지 않았다.
I have eaten to live, to serve, and occasionally to enjoy, but I have not eaten for pleasure.
4. 나는 인도의 한 시민으로서, 또한 양심을 존중하는 한 사람으로서 이 나라를 위해 정의를 행하고자 한다. 이 신념 때문에 처벌된다면 나는 서슴지 않고 중죄인이 될 명예를 얻고자 할뿐이다.
I intend to practice justice for this country as a citizen of India and also as a man of conscience. If this conviction punishes me, I will not hesitate to seek the honor of being a felon.
5. 나에게 가장 고귀한 사랑의 믿음을 주소서. 이것이 나의 기도이옵니다. 죽음으로써 산다는 믿음, 짐으로써 이긴다는 믿음, 연약해 보이는 아름다움 속에 강한 힘이 감추어져 있다는 믿음, 해를 입고도 원수 갚기를 싫어하여 겪는 고통의 존엄한 가치에 대한 믿음을 주옵소서!

6. 나에게 있어서 애국심은 인류애와 동일하다. 나는 인간이요, 인간이기 때문에 애국자이다.
For me, patriotism is the same as humanity. I'm a patriot because I'm a human being.
7. 내가 이 세상에서 인정하는 유일한 독재자는 내 속에 있는 양심이다.
The only dictator I acknowledge in this world is my conscience in my heart.
8. 노예가 스스로 그 이상 노예가 되지 않겠다고 결심하는 순간, 그의 속박은 사라진다. 그는 자신을 해방시키며 다른 노예에게 그 방법을 가르쳐 준다. 자유와 속박은 정신적 상태이다.
The moment a slave decides not to be a slave any more, his bondage disappears. He emancipates himself and teaches other slaves how to do it. Freedom and bondage are mental states.
9. 도의(道義)란 전쟁에서는 금지물이다.
Moral is forbidden in war.
10. 만약 한 사람의 인간이 최고의 사랑을 성취한다면, 그것은 수백만의 사람들의 미움을 해소시키는데 충분하다.
If one man achieves the best love, it is enough to satisfy the hatred of millions of people.
11. 만일 우리 모두가 늙은이나 젊은이나 남자나 여자나 모두 진실로 돌아가서, 일할 때나, 식사할 때나, 마실 때나, 놀 때나, 눈을 떴을 때나, 언제든지 그리고 마침내 육체가 진실과 혼연 일체가 된다면 얼마나 아름다울 것인가.
How beautiful it would be if all of us, old or young or male or female, were to return to the truth, to work, to eat, to drink, to play, to open our eyes, at any time and finally to be united with the truth.
12. 모든 사람의 눈으로부터 온갖 눈물을 닦아내는 것이 나의 소망이다.
It is my wish to wipe away all kinds of tears from everyone's eyes.
13. 무살생·비폭력(Ahimsa)은 가장 위대한 사랑이다. 그것은 최상의 법칙이다. 이것만이 인류를 구하는 유일한 길이다. 비폭력을 믿는 사람은 살아 있는 신을 믿는 사람이다.
"Ahmsa" is the greatest love. It is the best law. This is the only way to save humanity. He who believes in nonviolence is a man who believes in living God.
14. 문명이란 궁핍을 배가 시키는 것이 아니라 궁핍을 감소시키는 것이다. 오직 문명만이 참 행복과 만족을 촉진시키는 것이다. 또 그것은 봉사를 위한 능력을 증가시키는 것이다.
Civilization is not about doubling the need, but about reducing the need. Only civilization promotes true happiness and satisfaction. It also increases the ability to serve.
15. 민주주의에 대한 나의 개념은, 그 체제하에서는 가장 약한 자가 가장 강한 자와 똑같은 기회를 가질 수 있다는 것이다.
My concept of democracy is that under the system, the weakest can have the same opportunity as the strongest.
16. 박애(博愛)를 실천하려면 한층 더 커다란 용기가 필요하다.
Practice philanthropy requires greater courage.
17. 부당한 법률은 그 자체가 일종의 폭력이다. 그 법률 위반에 대한 체포는 더한 폭력이다.
Unfair legislation is in itself a form of violence. Arresting for the violation of the law is more violence.
18. 비폭력은 내 신앙의 제 1조이며, 내 강령의 마지막 조항이다.
Nonviolence is the first article of my faith, and the last clause of my code.
19. 비폭력은 사람으로서 할 수 있는 가장 완벽한 자기 정화이다.
Nonviolence is the most complete self-purification a person can do.
20. 비폭력은 악을 행하는 인간의 의지에 얌전하게 복종하는 것이 아니고, 폭력자의 의지에 대해서 온 영혼을 던지는 것이다.
Nonviolence is not a submissive submission to the will of men who do evil; it is the casting of the whole soul against the will of the violent.
21. 빈자(貧者)에게 있어서 경제는 영적인 것이다.
For the poor, the economy is spiritual.
22. 삶은 죽음에서 생긴다. 보리가 싹트기 위해서는 씨앗이 죽지 않으면 안 된다.
Life comes from death. In order for barley to germinate, the seed must die.
23. 시민의 불복종은 시민의 타고난 권리이다.
Civil disobedience is a citizen's innate right.
24. 신(神)은 만인을 결합시키는 밧줄이다. 설사 불구대천(不俱戴天)의 원수사이라 할지라도 이 밧줄을 끊는 것은 신 그 자체를 갈기갈기 찢어놓는 일이다. 아무리 악독한 사람에게라도 인간성은 있다.
God is a rope that binds all men together. Even if it is between enemies of the Phoenix, cutting off the rope is a rip-off of the god itself No matter how vicious, there is humanity.
25. 신은 1900년 전에만 십자가를 졌던 것이 아니고, 오늘도 지고 있고 또 날마다 죽으면서 소생(부활)한다. 2천 년 전에 죽은 역사상의 신에게만 의지해야 한다면 그것은 덧없는 위로에 지나지 않는다. 그러므로 역사상의 신을 말하기보다는 오늘 살아 있는 인간을 통해서 신의 모습을 보여줘야 할 것이다.
God did not have a cross only 1900 years ago, but today he is losing and dying every day to resuscitate. It is nothing more than a fleeting consolation if one has to rely only on the historical god who died 2,000 years ago. Therefore, rather than talking about historical Gods, we should show God through living human beings today.
26. 신을 심판할 능력을 가진 사람은 없다. 우리는 자비의 무한한 대양(大洋)에 있는 물방울이다.
No one has the ability to judge God. We are water droplets in the boundless ocean of mercy.
27. 애국심이란 인류애와 같다. 나는 인간이며 인간적이기 때문에 애국자다.
Patriotism is like humanity. I am a patriot because I am human and human.
28. 어떤 사람이든 추위, 더위, 배고픔, 목마름을 이기지 못하고, 불쾌한 일을 참고 견디는 힘이 없다면, 그는 결코 인생의 승리자가 될 수 없다. 그런 사람은 결코 빛나는 명성을 얻을 수 없을 것이다. 인내는 정신의 숨겨진 보배이다. 그것을 활용할 줄 아는 사람이 현명한 사람이다.
No man can ever be the victor of life without the strength to endure the cold, heat, hunger and thirst, and to endure unpleasant things. Such a man will never attain a shining reputation. Patience is the hidden treasure of the mind. He who knows how to use it is wise.
29. 여성의 직관은 때때로 남성의 오만한 지식에서 오는 자부심을 능가한다.
Women's intuition sometimes outweighs the pride that comes from men's arrogant knowledge.
30. 외국 지배의 여러 가지 죄악 가운데 역사상 가장 악랄한 범죄는 피지배 지역에서 모국어를 빼앗는 일이다.
The most vicious crime in history among the various sins of foreign domination is the depriving of one's native language in the area of control.
31. 우리들은 정신의 창문을 모든 방면에서 열어놓지 않으면 안 되는데, 거기에서 날려가서는 안 된다.
We must keep the windows of our minds open in all directions, but we must fly from there.
32. 인간은 누구나 하나님의 피조물(被造物)이다. 누구나 각각 신성한 불멸(不滅)의 힘을 갖고 있다.
All men are creatures of God. Everyone has the power of sacred immortality.
33. 일을 선택할 때에는 자신의 소질과 사회의 수요를 함께 생각해 보아야 한다.
When choosing a job, you should consider your talent and the demands of society together.
34. 전쟁은 절대 악이다. 그러나 그것은 확실히 한 가지 좋은 일을 한다. 그것은 공포를 몰아내고 표면상 용기를 자져다 준다.
War is an absolute evil. But it certainly does one good thing. It expelling fear and ostensibly pluck courage.
35. 조국을 위해, 민족을 위해 무엇을 할 것인가? 이것만이 나의 희망이요, 나의 목표이다.
What will you do for your country, for your people? This is my only hope, my goal.
36. 지구상의 어떤 나라도 자국의 나쁜 정부보다 다른 나라의 좋은 정부를 원하지 않는다.

The loyalty to the God of Truth surpasses all other fidelity.
40. 진실은 정당한 명분을 결코 해치지 않는다.
Truth never hurts a justifiable cause.
41. 추위를 피하거나 더위를 피하는 사람들은 차츰 춥고 더운 것에 대한 저항을 잃게 되고, 그만큼 약한 사람이 된다.
Those who avoid the cold or heat gradually lose their resistance to cold and hot, and become as weak as they are.
42. 틈만 나면 이런 기도를 하자. "나에게 사랑할 수 있는 최상의 용기를 주소서. 이것이 나의 기도이옵니다. 말할 수 있는 용기, 행동할 수 있는 용기, 당신의 뜻을 따라 고난을 감수할 수 있는 용기, 일체의 모든 것을 버리고 홀로 남을 수 있는 용기를 주옵소서. " 홀로 서서 세파를 헤쳐 나가는 용기 있는 사람으로 거듭나자.

43. 폭력이 짐승의 법칙인 것 같이 비폭력은 인간의 법칙이다.
As violence is the law of beasts, nonviolence is the law of man.
44. 하나님 이외에는 그 누구도, 그 무엇도 두려워 할 필요는 없다.
No one but God has to be afraid of anything.
45. 한 나라의 위대함은 짐승을 다루는 방법으로 판단할 수 있다.
A country's greatness can be judged by its way of dealing with animals.
46. 훌륭하게 이행된 의무로부터 나오지 않은 권리는 가질 가치가 없다.
A right not derived from a well-fulfilled obligation is not worth it.
